Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, clients’ homes, and their communities.

Position Summary

The Property Maintenance Technician will assist the Manager of Facilities, Security and Safety and perform a wide variety of day-to-day landscaping, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and general repair duties on a medium-sized suburban campus.  Additionally, you will continuously monitor the security of all buildings and grounds as well as the safety of our clients, living on CCB’s campus during their program(s).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections and identify issues, troubleshoot maintenance problems and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Respond and assist in all facility emergency situations as they occur, outside of normal work hours.  This may also include unscheduled inspections, snow removal and power/heat outages.
    • Other tasks include: 
      • painting (interior and exterior)
      • snow removal
      • monitor heating and cooling climate
      • perform hardware repair on windows, locks and doors
      • drain clogs, faucet/toilet, and change light bulbs
      • install appliances and equipment as needed
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of carpentry, landscaping, painting and the use of hand/power tools and landscaping equipment required.  
  • A mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills are a plus.
  • Possess strong customer service skills and welcoming attitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to define problems, resolve them in a timely manner and a proactive attitude required.
  • Must be able to work autonomously as well as with employees at all levels of the organization and thrive with ever changing priorities.  Also, must be sensitive and kind to the needs of disabled persons.
  • A current MA drivers’ license and good driving record required.
