Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, students’ homes, and their communities.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate Outreach Specialist who will be instrumental in providing crucial information, referral services, and advocacy for adults, persons with low vision, their families, and care-partners. This role not only involves building or enhancing community relations with senior centers, support groups, and regional agencies but also providing essential support directly to individuals in their homes. 

As part of a dedicated team that values compassion, innovation, and collaboration, you will:

• Establish and build a network that fosters partnerships with senior and rehab centers, medical facilities, nursing homes, visiting nurses, eye care providers, assisted living, low vision support groups, hospitals, government officials, federal agents, school leaders, and local businesses.
• Educate and provide the low vision community with blindness resources.
• Conduct intake interviews, determine client needs, facilitate referrals or provide information regarding resources and refer clients to local, state, or federal services as needed.
• Perform home visits for older adults with vision loss and assist their families and/or care-partners; and offer practical assistance and guidance tailored to their specific needs.
• Assist in program development to address emerging needs within the community of persons with vision loss, ensuring our services remain relevant and effective..
• Create/facilitate presentations, attend seniors health fairs, conferences and community events; present blindness resources at these events; and develop and lead community based programs.
• Track outreach and networking efforts.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned.

• 2+ years of experience working with persons with disabilities/blind or visually impaired individuals preferred.
• Background or license in rehabilitation, social work, or special education strongly preferred.  Certification in the field of vision loss is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and possess exceptional communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required.
• Strong working knowledge of a wide variety of client resources and services available to individuals who are blind and visually impaired required.
• Ability to travel around the state and New England area as needed. 
• An active MA drivers’ license and good driving record with no restrictions that will impact your ability to drive, required.
• Advanced skills working with Microsoft and Google Suite required.
