About David Tatel

David Tatel has served nearly 30 years on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where many crucial cases are decided or prepared for the Supreme Court. For 50 of his 80-plus years, he has been blind, relying first on aides to read texts and later on advanced technology to process large volumes of documents. Despite his vision loss, he has championed equal justice, decided landmark cases in environmental and voting rights, and exemplified what a great judge should be. Though he initially hid his deteriorating vision, he now fully embraces it, partly thanks to his guide dog, Vixen. His story of fighting for justice, with and without eyesight, is an inspiration to us all.
