Low Vision Services for Adults
Low Vision Solutions for Greater Independence
When vision changes begin to impact reading, using technology, completing everyday tasks, maintaining employment, or participating in the activities that matter most, specialized support can help. At The Carroll Center for the Blind, our Low Vision Specialists help adults maximize usable vision and develop practical strategies to support greater independence, confidence, and daily success.
Arthur K.
“[Bob], thank you for meeting with me today. I’ve learned a lot from you. Many of these devices I didn’t know existed. They certainly will help me with my vision but just as importantly, they will help reduce this constant feeling of lonely isolation. Paradoxically, I feel loneliest and most isolated when I’m among a group of people.”
Benefits of Low Vision Services at the Carroll Center
Our experienced Certified Low Vision Therapists work individually with each client to provide customized recommendations, instruction, and ongoing support based on personal goals, lifestyle, and visual needs.
Through evaluation and hands-on training, individuals are introduced to a variety of tools and approaches—including optical, non-optical, and electronic devices—to improve access and make everyday activities easier and more efficient. Services may include magnification options, lighting and glare strategies, reading and writing supports, assistive technology solutions, and environmental adaptations that promote success at home, in the workplace, at school, and in the community.
Functional Vision Assessment
A Functional Vision Assessment examines how vision is being used during everyday activities and identifies tools, techniques, and adaptations that may improve functional performance and accessibility.
During the assessment, a Certified Low Vision Therapist evaluates visual functioning and explores personalized solutions that may include magnification devices, optimized lighting, contrast improvements, computer accessibility tools, and other assistive technologies. Recommendations are individualized and centered around each person’s priorities and daily routines.
Low Vision Therapy And Training
Low Vision Therapy provides personalized instruction to help adults build the skills needed to use low vision devices, adaptive techniques, and technology with greater confidence and effectiveness.
Training is focused on real-world application and may include instruction in optical and electronic magnification, lighting and glare management, adapting reading and writing tasks, and using smartphones, tablets, computers, and other assistive technology. The goal is to help individuals strengthen independence, improve access to daily activities, and make effective use of their remaining vision.
Most services are provided at The Carroll Center for the Blind, where individuals have access to a wide range of low vision devices and technology resources. Additional service options may be available based on individual circumstances.
