Real World Of Work Experience
Build Skills and Confidence for the Real World.
Live on a college campus just outside of Boston, dive into hands-on internships, and build career-ready skills while working three days a week. By combining real work experience with the adventure of campus life, students gain the confidence and skills that set them up for success in future careers and independent living. It’s a summer that makes a real difference—and a lot more fun!

“The Carroll Center has been an integral part of my son’s journey. As a visually impaired person since birth, he has participated in programs at the Carroll Center supporting his learning and independence that will be vital to his success as an adult. Highly recommend the programming and staff at the Carroll Center.”
About the Program
Participants of the Real World of Work Experience program are matched with entry-level jobs and are supported by a job coach as needed, working three days a week. Living on a college campus, students manage their own rooms, laundry, and housekeeping with guidance from staff, and dine in the campus dining hall—just like a college student. One day each week is dedicated to visiting employers to explore different careers, and another day is reserved for a fun field trip to experience Boston’s history, culture, and energy.
Throughout the program, students will:
- Share daily work experiences and reflect on learning
- Learn to present themselves confidently in person and on paper
- Hear from adults who are visually impaired and employed
- Build job-seeking and workplace social skills
- Practice interviewing and resume writing
- Solve problems in real work scenarios
- Receive two paychecks for their hard work
The program is hands-on, practical, and designed to give students the skills and confidence to succeed on the job and beyond.
