Vocational Rehab Counselor (VRC) Intern

About Us
Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, students’ homes, and their communities.
Who We Seek
Someone who is interested in working with and making a difference in the lives of students aged 14 to 19 for the duration of the rehab summer youth programs and later with the rehab adult program. This individual will provide professional experience and Job Coaching services, such as job seeking skills, resume preparation and interviewing, to enable students to build confidence in seeking their own internships or jobs in nearby communities.
Responsibilities
- Carry a caseload of a two or more clients (depending on schedule)
- Provide job seeking skills to both individual clients and in a group client setting.
- A client lesson may include: resume preparation, interview skills, use of LinkedIn etc.
- Produce a professional summary on vocational goals, as discussed with the client.
- Attend and present updates on period Case Management meetings with the CCB Team.
- Present a client’s final meeting with the CCB team, family and Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors.
- Compose an end of program professional Vocational Report (summary and recommendations) for each client you work with.
- Job Coach prepares and supports blind teens and young adults for future employment in community settings. Individuals in the vocational program at the Carroll Center for the Blind participate in community-based job placements to prepare for future employment.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in/ possess Bachelor’s or Master’s degree level VRC, or related degree (i.e. Psychology, Human Services).
- Work experience with people who have vision loss or other disabilities desired.
- Ability to travel on public transportation and/or drive your own car is a plus.
- Great communication skills, both oral and written.
- Demonstrates professional demeanor and great work ethic.
