Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, clients’ homes, and their communities.

TVI or COMS who are interested in engaging with children ages 7-14 who are blind or visually impaired (who may or may not also have additional disabilities) during our summer program. You will provide these children with the skills necessary to bring independence and confidence to their lives.

Shifts Available:

TVI Day 8:00am to 4:00pm

TVI Evening 3:00pm to 10:00pm

COMS Day 8:00am to 4:00pm

COMS Evening 3:00pm to 10:00pm

TVI:

• Provide instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) to students ages 7 – 14 who have visual impairments.
• Provide assistance, training, and support to non-certified staff to maximize student independence and facilitate positive attitudes.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned.

COMS:

• Foster a supportive, inclusive, and accessible learning environment; support social interaction and self-advocacy
• Assess students’ O&M skills upon start of the program to determine their level of independence and safety.
• Instruct students in skills and concepts to enable them to travel as independently as possible during the program. Teach skills for travel with safety, proficiency and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments.
• Ensure students’ safety during the program while fostering maximum independence.
• Prepare or use equipment and materials as appropriate to promote development of O&M skills.
• Train non-COMS staff in safe travel techniques for students.
• Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Both TVI and COMS:

• Run small group activities and teach related skills
• Maintain a clean and organized household environment in the dorm
• Supervise and guide students during program outings
• Document student progress daily

TVI:

• Certification or licensure as a teacher of students with visual impairments. 
• Excellent interpersonal, organization and oral/written communication skills essential.
• Strong working knowledge of current mainstream and adaptive technologies and resources for teaching both low vision and non-visual learners in general and special education environments required.

COMS:

• M.Ed. in Orientation & Mobility and ACVREP COMS certification required (or eligible).  
• Experience with school-aged children. 
• Excellent organization, interpersonal and communication skills are a must, as is a working knowledge of current mainstream, adaptive travel technologies and resources for teaching low vision & nonvisual learners.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
