About Us

Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, clients’ homes, and their communities.

Or, are you a current student in an Orientation and Mobility program looking for practical experience or mentorship?

Position Summary

The Summer Teacher will supervise students who are blind or visually impaired (ages 7-14), lead small group activities and model and teach skills in social, recreational and independent living skill areas. The Summer Teacher will initiate and/or assist with cleaning and organizational tasks to help keep the program running smoothly and safely. The Summer Teacher will facilitate and support social interaction and self-advocacy with students and document student progress daily.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a supportive, inclusive, and accessible learning environment
  • Support social interaction and self-advocacy
  • Assist with running small group activities and teaching related skills
  • Help with maintaining a clean and organized household environment in the dorm
  • Supervise and guide students during program outings
  • Document student progress daily
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • College student or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills required
  • Experience working at summer camps or programs or with students who are blind or visually impaired or having other disabilities is a plus.
  • Current student in a vision studies program is a plus but not required.
