Summer Program Counselor

About Us
Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, clients’ homes, and their communities.
Who We Seek
We seek an enthusiastic, compassionate Summer Program Counselor to ensure the safety of our residential students during a seven-week summer program as well as create a positive experience in dormitory living for them.
Responsibilities
- Assist students during events such as sailing, fencing, dance, crafts, music, cooking, camping technology and much more.
- Informal socializing, monitoring client’s activities, writing brief shift reports, effectively communicating with staff, answering occasional telephone calls, and locking the doors at night.
- Help students with operating the microwave, laundry equipment, telephone and television remote control. Weekend work also includes some simple food preparation.
- Support students in the dormitories, provides excellent care and performs established processes in accordance with Carroll Center policies. This includes oversight of client evening/weekends activities, maintaining an active and accessible presence in the dormitory to facilitate client engagement and check on the client’s well-being, serving evening/weekend meals, monitoring all interactions with students throughout each shift, communicating with families and solving problems or emergencies that may arise.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Shifts Available (at least 1 of these shifts a week)
Weekday:
5:00pm to 10:00pm
5:00pm to 8:00am
10:00pm to 8:00am
Saturday & Sunday:
5:00pm-10:00pm
*Overnight shifts include meals, a single room during your shift, and time to sleep
Qualifications
- Prospective applicants must be at least 20 years old
- Work a minimum of 20 hours/week
- High School Diploma, some college preferred
- Experience working with teens and individuals with disabilities a plus
