Summer Housekeeping Instructor

[Seasonal, 8:30am to 5:00pm, 4 days a week]

About Us

Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, students’ homes, and their communities.

Who We Seek

Someone who is interested in working with students aged 14 to 19 on laundry skills, room cleaning, as well as personal organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and guide in housekeeping tasks including room cleaning, organizing, labeling, and cleaning bathrooms and other shared dorm areas.
  • Create a housekeeping chores chart in accessible formats where all students rotate shared area cleaning tasks.
  • Assist Activities of Daily Living (ADL) instructor with laundry instruction, specifically with students in need of extra attention.
  • Organizing personal items such as placing dirty laundry in designated laundry bags.
  • Identify the client’s strengths and weaknesses in all the above processes or skills (laundry and cleaning).
  • Collaborate with the student’s Personal Management Instructor on strategies to develop skills and self-confidence.
  • Provide feedback on any social skill challenges observed.
  • Evaluate and provide a report for each student upon program completion regarding the level of ADL skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff in the rehab team.
  • Participate as a blind mentor in weekly People Talk group (if visually impaired).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED or college student preferred.
  • Some education or related experience working with youth, in Human Services preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral/written communication and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Availability for program duration required.
