About Us

Each year, the Carroll Center for the Blind helps nearly 1,300 blind or visually impaired children, adults and senior citizens gain the skills they need to live active and fulfilling lives. Our Newton campus houses our rehabilitation program, computer training classes, low vision store, and administrative offices. A large portion of our programs are services conducted in public schools, clients’ homes, and their communities.

Position Summary

The Custodian/ Maintenance Worker will perform general daily housekeeping and custodial activities in the campus buildings and on the property to maintain a clean and safe work environment.  This individual will also provide grounds support, semi-skilled and skilled work in maintenance, construction, repair of buildings and equipment, and provide assistance to skilled maintenance staff. This position may be required to respond to any emergency on a 24-7 hour basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Custodial:

  • Keeps facilities and shared common areas (ex. kitchens, elevators, and high touch areas) clean and disinfected. Includes dusting and daily trash disposal.
  • Cleans and disinfects bathroomsStocks bathrooms with supplies as needed.
  • Vacuums hallways and all carpeted areas including offices, mops/sweeps all non-carpeted floors. Cleans spills as needed.
  • Cleans dormitories and client rooms as scheduled, with special turnover cleaning for departing clients. Washes certain bed linens, tablecloths and other linens as needed.
  • Interacts and communicates daily with staff.

Maintenance:

  • Notifies Manager of any issues or repairs as needed.
  • Assists Property Maintenance Technician with painting, snow and ice removal (ex. shoveling and ice melt), landscape tasks and any other duties as needed. *May get pulled away from cleaning responsibilities during snow storms.
  • Helps prepare for special meetings or events on campus with targeted cleaning assignments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, prior cleaning experience a plus
  • Ability to manage time efficiently and work autonomously.
  • Possess good verbal and written, organization and attention to detail skills as well as basic computer knowledge preferred (email, internet, Word documents)
  • Maintains a professional appearance and interacts positively with clients and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to lift 25-50 pounds required and push a housekeeping cart with supplies.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Successful background check and references required.
