Instruction at the Work Place

In some work settings, individuals require on the job instruction on specialized software or hardware that cannot replicated at our Technology Center in Newton Massachusetts. When this occurs, instruction is provided at the work site. For specially configured systems, the instructor may work with the local IT staff before instruction is provided and/or have the IT staff and/or supervisors observe instruction. On the job instruction can last from 1 day to several weeks and need not be held on consecutive days.

Instruction At the Home

If an individual works out of their home or is home-bound due to another condition, requests can be made for instruction at home. In this case the client needs to have all of the equipment and programs to be used during the instruction and need to set aside time and a reasonable learning environment for the instruction to take place.

Instruction At the School

K through 12 students who need instruction as the result of being too young to stay on the Carroll Center campus or for reasons of scheduling requirements may request that instruction take place at the clients school. Such instruction can be conducted either during school hours or as part of an after-school activity. Classroom and/or special education teachers are encouraged to attend with the client so that they may assist the client in learning to accomplish educational goals.

All equipment and programs must be made available during the instruction and an appropriate location needs to be arranged at the school. Parents may also participate if such an arrangement is made in advance.

Each session must be at least 2 hours long but the instruction can take place over a number of weeks and sessions need not be on consecutive days.

Instruction At the College or University

College students have their own particular needs. If a student is using a unique combination of hardware and software that they cannot bring to the Carroll Center or that the Carroll Center cannot replicate for instructional purposes, instruction can be provided on the college campus.

The dates and times of this type of instruction are scheduled by mutual consent between the client and the instructor but may not be shorter than a half day. It may also be necessary for the client to provide a device or program to the instructor in advance of the instruction so that a lesson plan my be developed. If any installation or configuration is required, the client must also be prepared to assist in contacting the proper staff at the college. As with all off campus instruction, training dates need not be contiguous.
